I went for a short walk at Big Willow Park this morning. And even though it is an overcast day, what I saw as I walked was

Light Everywhere

even in the shadows. New life was emerging, old life decaying, birds singing, geese honking, and new leaves unfurling on trees beside the path.

When I go out in nature I feel a sense of wonder and presence, life unfolds before my eyes, light and beauty radiate from everything, and my soul expands. You don’t need to be a photographer to experience light everywhere. You simply need to slow down and look closely at the world around you. Its light, beauty, and miraculous presence will show themselves to you.

At the more subtle level, the light that we perceive is also the light that we are. What we are perceiving is also what we are made of. The awareness with which we perceive is also connected to that light, so we talk about the light of consciousness. Light is pervading all things.

When I simply observe nature without judgment I see beauty even in the inevitable death and decay of plants and trees. Life feeds life; the circle keeps turning. Right now new life is unfolding in the woods, our gardens, and even in the ditches along the road. But if you look closely you can also see old life slowly falling apart.

One of the things that was so powerful about moving into photography and diving deep into it was I felt it was bringing me to another level of integration and wholeness.

Seeing the cycles of life unfold in life all around me helps me to accept the seasons of my own life and the loss of loved ones who have left before me. Looking for and finding beauty everywhere reminds me to savor the good and to spread light, not darkness.

Presence and unity of life are, for me, at the heart of my photography.

What brings you light my friends?

May you walk in beauty.
