The cool sunny weather on Sunday was delightful. But the wind made it difficult to make photographs outside. So I decided to use the wind to create some intentional camera movement photos (ICM). Instead of waiting for the wind to stop I wanted my camera to

Show Me the Wind.

What does the wind look like? Can you see it? Or does one simply feel it? There are so many different kinds of wind—a soft gentle breeze, hot gust, biting cold burst of air and more. Sunday’s wind was sometimes a soft gentle breeze, sometimes stronger. It was cool as the day was cool, but not biting. The leaves of the trees and grasses seemed to be dancing in the wind, enjoying the breezes that moved them this way and that.

The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn.

Camera Settings to Create Intentional Blur

First I had to slow down the exposure time so that the movement of leaves and flowers could be seen. In order to do that on the bright sunny morning, I increased my f-stop to the maxium (f/22) and decreased the ISO to the lowest it would go. That bumped up the exposure time enough in some instances to create a nice blur. But for full sun I needed to add camera movement along with the longer exposures. Adding a polarizer or neutral density filter would also have been helpful in increasing the exposure time.

Sometimes it’s fun to play with using camera movement in photos. I like the impressionist feeling I can get. Or the softness creates a beautiful background or texture to add to another photograph. The possibilities are endless.

But it takes many many experiments often to yield a single image that I like. Today’s photos are a mix of a couple that I like a lot along with several that show me the wind.

When I woke up in the morning the Sun was already up but hiding behind the clouds. The trees were swaying in the breeze. The clouds were floating as small boats in the sky. A strange fragrance caught me by surprise. I felt a rapturous frenzy inhaling it. The breeze drifted from the South and made me nostalgic. And life went on charting its own course. Life will paint you a masterpiece if you have the patience to see it!
