This beautiful warm April weather we are having is making me

Hungry for Gardening

I have to stop myself from rushing out to plant lettuce and sugar snap peas, because this is Minnesota after all. And the weather could change to cold and blustery still. But I’m holding out hope that we will continue to ease into spring with weather that’s more typical for April in Minnesota.

I treasure the discoveries of springtime in nature. And I don’t want spring to pass by too quickly. Instead I want to savor it and enjoy every second of it. I love it all—rainy days that water the thirsty landscape, tiny wildflowers in bloom, the scent of apple trees in bloom, tulips and daffodils on display, leaves slowly budding out, and the electric spring green that only lasts for a short while. And I love walking in the Big Woods (at Wolsfeld Woods SNA) before the mosquitoes appear, sitting out on the deck and soaking in the sunshine, and listening to the sounds of children laughing and playing outdoors.

By mid-April I will plant lettuce and sugar snap peas in my container garden (and probably a few kale plants to fool the deer who otherwise like to eat sugar snap pea plants as soon as they come up but don’t seem to like kale plants). And in May I’ll plant parsley and green beans.

As luck would have it, at about the time I’ll really want to visit the garden center it will be two weeks from my second immunization. I’ll feel so much safer being out and about (still masked) with the protection of the COVID vaccine.

This morning I went out with my camera and garden gnome to photograph the early wildflowers that bloom in my yard. It was fun seeing the beginning of the spring blossoms in my own back yard.

I hope you are also enjoying the beautiful spring weather and getting outdoors to enjoy it.

May you walk in beauty.
