Today is the first day of August already.

Good morning, Happy Saturday, and Happy August

I am thankful that everything is still looking green and lush — not many signs of fall.

Yesterday on my walk in the neighborhood I was reminded once again of the joy of simple things. I hope you will join me today in…

Remembering Joy

I’m including just a few photos and quotes to help you remember that joy can be found in ordinary life wherever you are.

A lone leaf caught near a wrinkle in the rough bark of a tree felt like poetry to me.

A leaf fluttered in through the window this morning,
as if supported by the rays of the sun,
a bird settled on the fire escape,
joy in the task of coffee,
joy accompanied me as I walked.
– Anais Nin

A simple color study of a landscape brings me joy even in it’s childish simplicity

I made a quick color study of an Ely landscape photograph of the Burntside River in fall and I loved the primitive tree shapes that I created. Making creative play a part of my day brings me joy.

Joy is not in things;
it is in us.
– Richard Wagner

Spread your wings wide

Joy is Everywhere

On my walk I stood for a long time on the path watching the monarch butterfly open and shut its wings, trying to time my iPhone shot with the exact moment that it unfurled its wings. There was a rhythm to its movements and I felt like we were in a dance together. Pure joy!

Find ecstasy in life;
the mere sense of living is joy enough.
– Emily Dickinson

A copy of a painting demo’d by Angela Fehr in Heart-led landscapes class

I tried out a new brand of watercolor paper yesterday and discovered that taping it down with masking tape is a bad idea. You can see the tear at the top that I made while removing the tape. But I LOVE this beautiful watercolor paper and the texture of it. It’s handmade in India and painting on it felt like putting joy on paper.

And Joy is Everywhere;
It is in the Earth’s green covering of grass;
In the blue serenity of the Sky;
In the reckless exuberance of Spring;
In the severe abstinence of gray Winter;
In the Living flesh that animates our bodily frame;
In the perfect poise of the Human figure, noble and upright;
In Living;
In the exercise of all our powers;
In the acquisition of Knowledge;
in fighting evils…
Joy is there Everywhere.
– Rabindranath Tagore, 1861-1941

May you walk in beauty (and joy).
