The sky had a pinky gold color this morning just before sunrise. As I looked out my windows I couldn’t help picking up my camera to try to capture the essence of the morning light.

Today is the winter solstice. The planet tilts just so to its star, lists and holds circling in a fixed tension between veering and longing, and spins helpless, exalted, in and out of that fleet blazing touch.

– Annie Dillard –

For me, winter solstice signals the turning from dark to light. Each day from today until summer solstice the sun will rise a minute or two earlier and set a minute or two later. Slowly we will return to the glories of spring and summer.

In the meantime I like to take time to appreciate the darkness. The holiday lights would not look quite so beautiful in July. Shorter day length encourages me to stay home and cocoon. It’s a wonderful time of year to gestate new project ideas or to simply unwind and relax.

“The winter solstice has always been special to me as a barren darkness that gives birth to a verdant future beyond imagination, a time of pain and withdrawal that produces something joyfully inconceivable, like a monarch butterfly masterfully extracting itself from the confines of its cocoon, bursting forth into unexpected glory.” — Gary Zukav

Happy Solstice Everyone!

Savor these dark days as time for your soul to relax and restore. Breathe in the beauty of this season. Find time to choose joy now and in the coming year.

May you walk in beauty.

Please note: My website is still under construction and a lot of things are not working. Please bear with me. It make me a few weeks to sort it all out.
