Quote of the day: “One of the most sacred duties in any life is to honorably imagine yourself, to bring the full depth and care and luminosity to imagining the person that you actually are. The depth of who you are also depends on the depth of your ability to imagine yourself.” — John O’Donohue

Stepping out of ordinary time

Ice reflections

I am preparing for my 3 1/2 month walk-about in Hawaii this week—writing lists, gathering belongings, checking off items on my lists, getting together with friends.

I leave bright and early Sunday morning. A friend asked me this morning if I was nervous or afraid.

I thought about it and realized that I am neither nervous nor afraid, which is unusual for me.

I have experienced both fear and anxiety during previous weeks. But for the past week, I’ve felt a curious calmness seep into my being. Now I just feel a deep trust that everything I need is taken care of and every experience I have while I’m there will be perfect—not necessarily comfortable and fun all of the time—but perfect none-the-less.

In an effort to be fully present in the moment I have been endeavoring NOT to plan or imagine too much about what I will do or what my trip will be like.

I feel as if I am stepping out of ordinary time. Traveling simply, letting go of needing to know every detail, trusting that I will figure my way as I go is a new experience for me. Instead of imagining what will happen, I am imagining myself as someone who is resilient, strong and resourceful.

Sometimes stepping out of one’s normal life, creates a space for a clearer perspective, for appreciating what one has, for learning where one’s rough edges lie. I hope that this walk-about does that for me.

May you experience the sweet peace of calmness and trust in your life this week and may you experience joy and gratitude for all of the blessings in your life.
