Making Meaning

Today I want to write a little bit about the creative process and Making Meaning in your artistic work. As I record my responses to the beauty I see in the world through the lens of my camera, I think a lot about the artistic process. When is the photograph I make just a photograph documenting what I saw and when is it art? I don’t have a definitive answer for that. Morning Light on the Pond

Each morning when I wake up, I open the bedroom shades and look out at the Morning Light on the Pond seeing whether the day will be bright or cloudy, windy or still. Some mornings the view is so gorgeous that I head out to the living room in my nightgown to photograph the beauty of the moment through the large windows that overlook the pond. Je suis arrivé!

Yesterday the pond was completely open with no ice to be seen. This morning with the colder weather a skim of ice covered most of the pond. It feels like winter is saying… Je suis arrivé! (I have arrived!) It amazes me how quickly this change happens. Just yesterday I noticed that the Northern Shoveler ducks that had made a migration stop on our pond finally left. They spent almost a full week patrolling the pond, bills slanted halfway beneath the water, siphoning up food to prepare for their journey south. The Colors of November

On a short walk today I went looking for The Colors of November in the neighborhood. I found what I expected—that brownish gray landscape I associate with November. But I also found little pops of color and some subtle shapes that made my heart sing. Who knew so much color and beauty was hiding in plain sight? A Mix of Old and New

It’s the time of year when I search harder to find something beautiful to photograph. So today I thought I would share A Mix of Old and New images that I’ve made. I went back to my photos from 2013-2016 today and found many photographs that I had forgotten about.
