Every year I make 5×7 inch calendars as gifts for friends and family at Christmas-time. I love the size of these nifty little 2020 calendars. They can be placed in a frame, propped up on a small easel, tacked to your bulletin board—you name it. And when you’re done with the calendar you can cut off the image on the top and have a nice 5×5 inch photograph you can frame.

I have one “rule” for making my calendars. The photos I use for the calendar must be made in the current year (2019 for my 2020 calendar). This year even though I did less photography than usual, I made two different calendars.

I LOVE making these calendars, perhaps because I love making things. There is something amazing about seeing a photograph that I made emerge on paper from my printer. It always feels like magic. A lot of work goes into creating photo prints that one never sees. First I edit each and every photo that I use until it looks as I want it to look. Then I do test prints to make sure that the print reflects my vision and that the colors are true. It can be tricky because seeing an image on the screen is not at all like seeing a print image. It often takes 2-3 test images before the print looks as I think it should.

2020 Calendars

One of my 2020 calendars features flower photographs. I love photographing flowers and this year I made a lot of flower photos. When I was unable to go out hiking because of my hip, I could still buy a bunch of flowers and photograph them in my dining room “photo studio.”

The other calendar I called “Close to Home” because most of the images in it were taken close to home (or at home). It’s a look at the seasons here in Plymouth Minnesota and in nearby locations (except for a couple of Northern Minnesota images).

Because I was limited in how much I could get out for much of the year due to hip problems and hip replacement surgery in June, I took a lot of photos through the windows of our house and in the neighborhood this year. Over half the photos in this calendar were taken from my house or in the neighborhood.

I’m very happy to report that I’m able to get out and hike much more now that I’ve recovered from the surgery and I’m so grateful! In the coming year I’m looking forward to spending a lot more time out in nature with my camera.
