Quote of the day: “To live is so startling it leaves little time for anything else.” ― Emily Dickinson

The past week has been a challenging week for both my husband and me, health-wise so neither of us has been out and about except for picking up necessary items at the grocery store. At times like this I like to practice gratitude. I take time every day to remind myself of all the things I am grateful for and to notice ordinary miracles. It keeps me from having my own private pity party.

And I have so much to be grateful for!

Here’s my list:

  • Melting! The fierce winter has finally let go and we have welcomed milder weather.  Icicles form, drip and shrink during the daylight hours, and freeze again when temperatures drop. They are so beautiful. The sunlight and milder temperatures make me dream of gardening. Time to start thinking about how I want to expand my container garden next summer.

  • Pears!  With the continuing inflammation in my gut, I have been unable to eat any raw food for almost 5 months. Pears are one of the few fruits that I can tolerate. I peel and slice the pear, add water, and cook—a welcome treat in my very monotonous limited food selection right now.

  • Acupuncture! I finally sought additional alternative healing help from an acupuncturist this week. After a single appointment on Friday I had a significantly better day for most of Saturday. I saw this same practitioner about 15 years ago for a similar problem and she was the only one who was able to help. Though I was hoping that my body would heal itself without needing help, after almost 5 months of worsening symptoms, it is a relief to have this assistance. If the acupuncture treatments continue to be as helpful, perhaps I can cancel the appointment with a gastroenterology specialist that I’ve been waiting 6 weeks for.

  • A new to me flower! After picking up a few needed groceries yesterday, I stopped briefly at a florist to pick up some flowers to photograph. I found one I’ve never heard of before. It’s called Agapanthus Orientalis.  A cluster of delicate purple flowers sit at the top of a long thick green stem. It looks rather other-worldly standing tall all alone in a vase—so pretty.

  • Freesias! I love the scent of freesia flowers but they are often hard to find. Along with the unique Agapanthus I found yesterday, there were freesias at the florist too.  I chose a bunch of white freesia. Tall and graceful, they are such fun to have around.

  • Shadow play!  I was getting ready to put my camera away because the late afternoon sunlight was too contrasty on my flowers. Then I noticed the wild shadows the flowers were creating against the backdrop—a little bit of abstract art.

That’s my list for today! What are you grateful for?
