Still waiting for spring

11×14 Framed Print for my upcoming exhibit

Spring is Taking Its Sweet Time Arriving in Minnesota

Remnants of snow drifts still decorate our front yard. Temperatures in Minneapolis are above freezing during the day but not as much above freezing as I would like. Ponds and lakes are thawing around the edges. Ducks and geese are returning. But it is still cold and gray, and snowstorms are in the weather forecast for the coming week.

No spring bulbs are popping up yet. No leaves are budding out either. But more joggers, walkers, bicyclists and motorcycles are showing up on streets and jogging paths. The sun on my face feels warm and  children have been running through our back yard at the edge of the pond, chasing ducks and throwing sticks out to the remaining ice in the center of the pond.

I am dreaming of my summer garden. With the help of my daughter and husband, I am planning to build a 4′ x 8′ raised bed garden in front of our house this spring. I’ve decided to make it waist-high, 12 inches deep, somewhat like the growing tables I saw in green houses I visited in Hawaii.

I’ve been down with a bad cold and cough for two weeks now and while I’m feeling better, I’m still not fully well. This quiet time has been valuable thinking, editing, creation time for me. Today I started printing and framing images for my upcoming exhibit at First Universalist Church in Minneapolis.

After weeks of reviewing images, editing images, printing test images, and propping up prints all over the house I am finally committing to printing and framing images for my exhibit. Slowly, slowly the images and theme have emerged. Most of my picks for the show are very different from my initial favorites. A few of my early picks still remain, but most are long gone, replaced by a succession of images that have only recently begun gelling into a body of work that represents the best of my Hawaii photos.

The photo above shows my favorite print from today. I have much more work to do, but I am very happy with the prints I made today.
