Ups and Downs

Looking out my windows this morning I saw golden cottonwood tree leaves floating on the surface of the pond behind the house—portents of bare tree limbs and winter days ahead. But I also saw the beautiful peeling bark of the river birch tree in the backyard and the goldenrod blooming at the edge of the pond. I am soaking in the beauty of this day. Life is full of Ups and Downs and this week has reminded me that nothing stays the same, surprises are expected. Feeling great about my two mile hike in Wolsfeld Woods Monday, I was surprised Read more…

Return to the Woods

This morning I took a hike at Wolsfeld Woods SNA. I haven’t been there since late spring and it felt good to Return to the Woods This is one of my favorite places to hike. A remnant of the Big Woods that once covered a large portion of this part of Minnesota, these woods are filled with tall maple trees, oak trees, and basswood trees. When the leaves turn golden in the fall, walking there is like walking in a golden cathedral. Today, only a few leaves have fallen, harbingers of what is to come in about a month. When Read more…

Luscious

I picked up a bouquet of flowers at the Farmers Market yesterday. There were so many in the bouquet that I couldn’t fit all of them into a single vase. What fun I’ve had arranging them and photographing them. It’s a Luscious bunch of flowers! Other words that come to mind to describe them are sumptuous, resplendent, jazzy, vivid, dazzling, cheerful, luxurious, enchanting, and gaudy. I am soaking them in and celebrating their beauty as the season slowly turns to fall. It is on days like these that I would like to stop time, and savor the beauty of the Read more…

Photographing Frozen Flowers

Yesterday I worked on Photographing Frozen Flowers I picked a cluster of begonia flowers, immersed them in a container of water and put the container in the freezer. Later, when the water was completely frozen, I removed the block of ice from the container, placed it on a glass plate and began making photographs. Though I have seen other flower photographers’ images of frozen flowers, this is the first time I’ve tried it. I always have a hard time taking something so beautiful and alive and hastening its demise. It was only because I picked only a small sprig of Read more…

Wandering With Camera

This morning I took a walk at Fish Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove, MN, with my camera. Bikers and walkers passed me by as I stopped here and there to look more closely and make photographs. A woman walked by me talking animatedly on her telephone. I wondered why she bothered walking by the lake since she didn’t seem to be paying any attention to the beauty surrounding her. Perhaps she got more enjoyment out of the walk than I imagined. I often call my walks more of a Wandering With Camera since I stop often and get lost Read more…
