Saying Yes

After several days of being very grumpy about the continuing snow I started thinking about Saying Yes to whatever life brings me, even now, when I so wish winter would end and spring begin. Wishing cannot change the weather (at least my wishes so far have been quite unsuccessful). I may as well figure out something to be joyful and grateful for. Otherwise life becomes quite a burden. i imagine that yes is the only living thing. ― E.E. Cummings So this morning when big fluffy snowflakes were falling (again!) I noticed myself saying, “That is so beautiful!”  I simply Read more…

Un Rêve de Printemps (A Dream of Spring)

I look out my office window and I see snow everywhere and more snow falling. But I won’t make photos of the new snow today. Instead I’m thinking about spring. I’m dreaming… Un Rêve de Printemps (A Dream of Spring) The weather forecast for this week is depressing, snow, snow and more snow—when I am longing for the arrival of spring. I am already tired of winter and wondering how long it will take to melt all of the snow we already have. Ice, Birds, and a Little Red Squirrel

I’ve had a bit of a cold this week and also been feeling very tired of winter. So I haven’t been the easiest person to live with. Despite my grumpiness I still enjoyed making photographs through the windows of our house. Today I’m sharing some photos of Ice, Birds, and a Little Red Squirrel A couple of days ago we had freezing rain that coated the landscape with ice. Tiny icicles dripped from tiny tree branches. Twigs of the trees in the backyard were encased with ice. And the protective domes above my bird feeders were coated with ice along Read more…

Thanks for the Sunshine

I imagine the trees outside talking about the weather. What would they say today? Looking out the window at all of the snow on the ground I imagine a grumpy tree muttering, “Enough already!” But when I think again about what I know of trees I’m pretty sure they’re saying Thanks for the sunshine today. Birds have been busy at the feeders outside my office window and squirrels have been scampering up and down trees in our backyard. The clear blue cloudless sky looks inviting. Time for a walk in the woods, I think. Will the trails be packed down Read more…

Joie de Vivre

What is Joie de Vivre? A literal translation from French would be “joy of life” or “joy of living.” I think that there is a truth hidden in this simple phrase. Life without joy would not be worth living. This morning with even more new snow on the ground here in Minneapolis, and snow still falling, wind blowing, and temperatures very cold outside, I could be tempted to moan and wail about this never-ending winter. Instead, as I think of war torn Ukraine, earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria, climate change, and of other tragedies around the world I feel Read more…
