Big Woods Beauty

Yesterday I headed out to Wolsfeld Woods SNA to check out the autumn Big Woods Beauty of this remnant of the Big Woods that once covered a large part of Minnesota. It was magnificent! I kept craning my head up to look at the tops of the tall sugar maple trees above. And it simply filled me with awe. I’ve been hiking in these woods for over 25 years and I never tire of their breathtaking beauty, especially this time of year. To me, this is God’s cathedral, ineffable, sacred, beyond words. I feel a sense of benevolence in the Read more…

Morning Reflections

Every morning this week I’ve noticed the Morning Reflections in the pond behind our house. And each morning I pick up my camera and try to express some of the joy I feel seeing the bright reflections in the water. I never tire of seeing the pond after all these years. It is always changing through the turn of the seasons and also within each day as the light and weather change. Somehow it feels like a reminder to me to treasure each and every moment as things can change in the blink of an eye. I noticed myself having Read more…

Amazing Glow

I greeted the morning on this cloudy Sunday by noticing the Amazing Glow of the sugar maple tree that I could see out my kitchen window. Though it glows every fall and this year’s glow is less vivid than other years, it still makes my heart leap to see it’s fleeting fall beauty. Each day I try to soak in and savor the beauty of moments like the one when I first glanced out the kitchen window this morning. Why is life beautiful? As a photographer I see beauty in color, form, balance, and pattern. Some colors, forms, and patterns Read more…

Going Deeper

Today as I resumed photographing the bouquet of flowers I bought earlier this week I found myself looking deeper, Going Deeper as I searched for the beauty and message these flowers brought me. The contrast with my earlier photos of the flowers was huge. Are these images “better” than the first ones I made? Who knows? It’s probably a matter of personal taste and experience. But for me, today, they express more of what I want to express. I switched to using my older Canon camera today for this work as I’m still more familiar with its controls for this Read more…

Watercolor Morning

This morning felt like a Watercolor Morning with the rain falling gently on the pond behind the house. So I decided to create some photographs with intentional blur by introducing intentional camera movement. I kind of like the soft blurry look I achieved. It feels like a good representation of how the morning felt to me. Yesterday I picked up a bunch of flowers at Trader Joe’s and began photographing them in my dining room studio. I had hoped to begin photographing the flowers today where I left off yesterday but with today’s overcast skies even with the light from Read more…
