Bright New Morning

Quote of the day: “Each day is a little life: every waking and rising a little birth, every fresh morning a little youth, every going to rest and sleep a little death.” — Arthur Schopenhauer No rain yet this morning! It’s a bright new day. All around me the air is almost steamy with the humidity of rain from the previous days and nights evaporating into the bright hot sunlight. I have no plans for today, no list of things to do, no places to go. As I sit here looking out at the beautiful gardens, I am filled with wonder at Read more…

Amazing Grace – How Being Mindful Created an Experience of Grace and Harmony

Quote of the day: “…I want first of all – in fact, as an end to these other desires – to be at peace with myself. I want a singleness of eye, a purity of intention, a central core to my life that will enable me to carry out these obligations and activities as well as I can. I want, in fact – to borrow from the language of the saints -to live ‘in grace’ as much of the time as possible. I am not using this term in a strictly theological sense. Whale Watch!

Quote of the day:  [the whale groans] Dory: Okay, he either said, “move to the back of the throat,” or he “wants a root beer float”. — Finding Nemo I went on a whale-watching cruise over on the Kona side on Tuesday. We gathered before sunrise at the dock. The light was amazing as morning began to awaken. There were about 25 of us on the boat. We went in search of humpback whales which winter in the warm waters off the coast of Hawaii. They come from the cold waters of Alaska every year, usually from the months of Read more…

Cities of refuge – Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau

Quote of the day: “The historical park preserves the site where, up until the early 19th century, Hawaiians who broke a  kapu (one of the ancient laws) could avoid certain death by fleeing to this place of refuge or puʻuhonua. The offender would be absolved by a priest and freed to leave. Defeated warriors and non-combatants could also find refuge here during times of battle. The grounds just outside the Great Wall that encloses the puʻuhonua were home to several generations of powerful chiefs.” — Wikipedia A few days ago I visited Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park on the southern Kona coast of the Big Read more…

Being Here

Quote of the day: “You might be tempted to avoid the messiness of daily living for the tranquility of stillness and peacefulness. This of course would be an attachment to stillness, and like any strong attachment, it leads to delusion. It arrests development and short-circuits the cultivation of wisdom.” ― Jon Kabat-Zinn, Wherever You Go, There You Are Here I am sitting in my little studio room in the Kona Hills. It’s almost sunset and it has been a beautiful day. I went to a park up north and enjoyed a walk to a secluded beach, feeling the breeze in my face, swimming in Read more…
