Coming Home

Quote of the day: ““Travel does not exist without home….If we never return to the place we started, we would just be wandering, lost. Home is a reflecting surface, a place to measure our growth and enrich us after being infused with the outside world.” ― Josh Gates, Destination Truth: Memoirs of a Monster Hunter I came home from my Hawaii winter walk-about last week. For two and a half months I soaked up the climate and the scents and the experiences of the Big Island. I met people. I explored. I made photographs.  And I moved outside my normal comfort zone and Read more…

Photo Art With Akiko

Quote of the day: ““Life on earth is a whole, yet it expresses itself in unique time-bound bodies, microscopic or visible, plant or animal, extinct or living. So there can be no one place to be. There can be no one way to be, no one way to practice, no one way to learn, no one way to love, no one way to grow or to heal, no one way to live, no one way to feel, no one thing to know or be known. The particulars count.” ― Jon Kabat-Zinn, Wherever You Go, There You Are Here are some photo compositions I Read more…

Making Chocolate in Hawaii

Quote of the day: “Happiness. Simple as a glass of chocolate or tortuous as the heart. Bitter. Sweet. Alive.” ― Joanne Harris, Chocolat I was curious about how chocolate is made from the cacao bean. When I heard about a class that Tom Sharkey (Owner of Shark’s Coffee in Hilo and Honamu) offered, I signed up. Most of us know that chocolate comes from the Cacao fruit. But most of us don’t have a clue how it becomes chocolate. Cacao is not native to Hawaii, but more and more farmers here are trying their hand at growing it. The interest in dark chocolate Read more…

Creating Paradise in my Mind

Quote of the day: “Paradise was always over there, a day’s sail away. But it’s a funny thing, escapism. You can go far and wide and you can keep moving on and on through places and years, but you never escape your own life. I, finally, knew where my life belonged. Home.” ― J. Maarten Troost, Getting Stoned with Savages: A Trip Through the Islands of Fiji and Vanuatu I’ve decided that I’m almost “done” with this adventure/journey/sabbatical or whatever you want to call it, and booked my plane ticket home. I am missing my sweet spouse and home and Gracie the Read more…

Photo-Heart Connection January – An Island of Artists, Dreamers and Idealists

Quote of the day: “He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.” ― St. Francis of Assisi It is hard to believe that the month of January has flown by already and it is time to pick an image that I made during that time that most connects with my heart. I am still in Hawaii making photographs and following my heart (arrived in early December 2012 and will probably leave sometime this month). Read more…
