This is a good time of year to take time to

Pause and Reflect

before heading into new endeavors. Despite the fact that it’s been decades since I went back to school in September, I still have a feeling of possibility and opening when September arrives. It’s as if I might discover some new possibilities unfolding. I am tempted to jump into many new things just because I can. But instead I am stepping back and reflecting on what I want to create in the next months and how best to do that.

Today, after a full week I am happy to sit back and contemplate the beauty around me. This morning I played some more with making photographs of the Queen Anne’s lace fronds I gathered earlier in the week. And soon I plan to kick back and settle in with a good book.

In looking closely at the Queen Anne’s lace as they  tilt up and cup themselves in a tight bundle to create seeds, at first glance, the bundles look chaotic and messy. But when I look closely I see order and symmetry in the tiny details of the dying flowers. That is often the way with our lives as well. Though things seem chaotic at times there is a pattern that is unfolding, there is order in the midst of chaos. It just takes patience, time, and presence to finally see the pattern.

Today I’m flying low and I’m
not saying a word
I’m letting all the voodoos of ambition sleep.

The world goes on as it must,
the bees in the garden rumbling a little,
the fish leaping, the gnats getting eaten.
And so forth.

But I’m taking the day off.
Quiet as a feather.
I hardly move though really I’m traveling
a terrific distance.

Stillness. One of the doors
into the temple.
