On my walk at Big Willow Park last Sunday I came upon this burr oak leaf and acorn on the path where I walked. Big Willow Park has many native burr oak trees which I often don’t pay attention to. This perfect little windfall on my path reminded me that
From Tiny Acorns
mighty oaks grow.
It also reminded me that oak trees are one of the best native trees to plant to support wildlife.
Oaks support more life-forms than any other North American tree genus, providing food, protection or both for birds to bears, as well as countless insects and spiders, among the enormous diversity of species.
— Why You Should Plant Oaks, New York Times article by Margaret Roach
I remember a huge oak tree that I photographed in Minnehaha Regional Park a few years ago. Seeing it filled me with awe. So I dug two photos of it out of my archives to share with you today.
Tiny Actions
Many actions and events in our lives seem small and tiny. But it is from tiny actions that change happens. I keep reminding myself that each tiny action I take towards respecting and taking care of the earth may be like a tiny acorn. It may grow into something like a mighty oak.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
— Margaret Mead
Don’t lose hope as we live with the consequences of decades of ignoring the needs of the earth. Take one tiny action today to care for the life and health of our planet. Remember that from tiny acorns mighty oaks grow.
May you walk in beauty.
