As spring ever so slowly arrives and the temperatures warm into the 50’s most days this week I feel

The Call

to go outside and wander in the yard or on the park paths in my neighborhood.

What in your life is calling you, When all the noise is silenced, The meetings adjourned… The lists laid aside, And the wild iris blooms by itself in the dark forest… What still pulls on your soul? –Rumi

The first spring wildflowers are blooming. Ducks, geese, herons, and egrets are showing up in neighborhood ponds. Grass is greening. And slowly the world is waking up.

The Call

Dawn, and the geese announce
their landing on the pond—
and though the reluctant body says sleep,
the heart rouses to attend their arrival.
So many awakenings seem to happen like this:
when I feel least ready, least willing, most averse,
something demands I rise—
something strident, insistent, wildly alive,
saying, Now! It’s time! You’re here.

Every time I hear a pair of geese honking as they fly overhead my spirit lifts. Each spring wildflower that I see brings a smile to my face. I spend time on my deck swing soaking in the sounds, scents, and sensations of spring arriving. Almost every day I open a couple of windows an inch or two to let in fresh air for a part of the day.

When my children were young I remember that they could not get enough time outdoors once spring began to arrive. They tumbled and played in the yard like puppies, enjoying the fresh air and freedom of being outside after a long winter. Some days I feel somewhat puppy-like myself in these fresh spring days.

Are you also feeling the call of spring?

May you walk in beauty.
