The day dawned bright, cold, and beautiful. And now the wind is beginning to gust. The thermometer reads minus 11 degrees F.

It’s a good day for

Singing Up the Dawn

Though I don’t plan to go outside today with the cold temperatures and severe wind chill, I am enjoying watching the day present itself outside my windows. The winds are chill and the snow deep, and we have officially entered winter. But each new day will bring more light until summer solstice. Winter doesn’t last forever.

After the longest night, we sing up the dawn. There is a rejoicing that, even in the darkest time, the sun is not vanquished. Sol Invictus — the Unconquered Sun — is seen once again, staining the horizon with the promise of hope and brilliance.

How are you feeling this cold December morning my friends? Are you counting your blessings and thankful you are cozy and warm at home, or are you facing challenges or feeling down? I am sending you wishes for a beautiful holiday, however you are feeling, however you celebrate or don’t celebrate.

Today I am contemplating ways to be still and joyful at home despite the cold and blizzard warnings.

That’s what winter is: an exercise in remembering how to still yourself then how to come pliantly back to life again.

The soft light snow from yesterday created deep caps of snow on the bird feeder covers. They look like they’re wearing tall white top hats.

I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, ‘Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.’

Stay warm, stay safe, and have a beautiful day. Enjoy singing up the dawn every day.

May you walk in beauty.
