I am beginning to make progress on my new project, starting to find my way to a style that expresses what I want to say. And right now when I’m not calling it my Mary Oliver project, I’m calling it my
Finding God in Everyday Life
project.
Today I worked and reworked photographs again and again until everything began to click. I love that the photographs I’m using are everyday photos of the pond behind our house, trees in the area, scenes of everyday beauty that are often overlooked.
This is what I love to do. Leave the spectacular travel photography to someone else to do. My passion lies in seeing beauty here, now, every day.
Early this morning I was working downstairs when I looked out at the reflections on the pond and thought, “I want to photograph this.” By the time I remembered to bring my camera out it was late morning and the light was very different. Still, it was gorgeous to me.
A short five minute break in the backyard with my camera refreshed me and elevated my spirits.
When I discover beauty and wonder in everyday life I am also finding God in everyday life. If pondering the improbability and miracle of life doesn’t make you believe in God, I don’t know what will.
I’ll leave you with a short poem I read recently…
When the people call the Earth “Mother,”They take with loveAnd with love give backSo that all may live. When the people call Earth “it,”They use herConsume her strength. Then the people die.Already the sun is hotOut of season. Our Mother’s breastIs going dry.She is taking all green into her heartAnd will not turn backUntil we call herBy her name.— Marilou Akiakta
Have a beautiful weekend friends.
May you walk in beauty.
