Last evening I took a

Twilight Walk

in the neighborhood.

So today I thought I would take you along on my walk to see some of what I saw in the fading light.

Walking up the hill in the park next to my house I saw bushes with a few red and gold leaves beginning to show. There were worn and torn, and probably had provided food for one or more insects over the summer months.

The lights on the deck railing of a house beside the path glow in the twilight.

The Lamps
Eight o’clock, no later,
You light the lamps,
The big one by the large window,
The small one on your desk,
They are not to see by–
It is still twilight out over the sand,
The scrub oaks and cranberries.
Even the small birds have not settled
For sleep yet, out of the reach
Of prowling foxes. No,
You light the lamps because
You are alone in your small house
And the wicks sputtering gold
Are like two visitors with good stories
They will tell slowly, in soft voices,
While the air outside turns quietly
A grainy and luminous blue.
You wish it would never change–
But of course the darkness keeps
Its appointment. Each evening,
An inscrutable presence, it has the final word
Outside every door.

Next I spied an airplane flying high above me, soaring like a bird through the sky. I wonder where it is going and also give thanks that I am here on the ground watching it soar to gracefully through the sky.

As always the cloud forms fascinated me over and over again. With the colors of the fading daylight they moved in wispy forms and seemed to glow from within. It always amazes me that the sky can be so bright at twilight when the trees and landscape look so dark.

Sometimes the clouds take on pink tints and float through the sky like puffy marshmallows.

The silhouettes of dark tree branches against the colorful sky fascinate me. How can they be so dark when the sky is so bright?

I found a surprise beside this path that I walk almost every day — a beautiful large mushroom seeming to whisper, “Eat me.” And indeed, it did look like something had taken a small bite from it’s edge.

I’m nearing home now and I see more clouds in the sky with tree silhouettes. It’s getting darker. I’m glad that I am almost home.

A flock of geese appears, soaring high above me. Are they a family of geese out for an evening practice flight?

And finally the flowers in a neighbor’s front yard seem to glow like a beacon in the fading light of the day, guiding me along towards home.

What a beautiful world we live in!

When was the last time you took a twilight walk?

May you walk in beauty.
