Tattered prayer flag moving in the breeze

This time of year always reminds me of

Transience

“And so the spring buds burst, and so I gaze,
And so the blossoms fall, and so my days …”
Onitsura

How quickly the blossoms of springtime fade. And so too, our lives are lived. I am often surprised to be the age I am. How did this happen? Why didn’t I pay more attention when our children were young? And how did our grandchildren become teenagers—already!

The sweetness of these early days of springtime reminds me to pay attention and to savor each and every moment. The fabric of our lives frays and time passes. Nothing stays the same. Old things die and new things are born. And the cycle repeats itself over and over through eternity.

“Little by little, and also in great leaps,
life happened to me,
and how insignificant this business is.
These veins carried
my blood, which I scarcely ever saw,
I breathed the air of so many places
without keeping a sample of any.
In the end, everyone is aware of this:
nobody keeps any of what he has,
and life is only a borrowing of bones.”
Pablo Neruda, The Essential Neruda: Selected Poems

But still, my life goes on. Even when I look at the world through weary eyes wondering how we got to where we are, I know that this too will change.

Creative Springtime

For months now, I’ve been passing time making “pretty” photographs but not really working on my art. And I was content to do so. But lately I’m pondering working on a new series of images.

As I pondered what it was that I wanted to work on, I realized that ideas don’t just happen. We ponder them, cultivate and nurture them. It is rare for a story, idea, or a work of art to emerge without many false starts and much perseverance. I have a theme in mind for this new series of images but it’s still so new and unformed I’m not yet ready to share it.

Perhaps my idea will grow and come to fruition, and perhaps it will not. For now, I will keep it in the dark, waiting for the seed of this idea to germinate, keeping it warm and moist, like a seed, in the soil of my imagination.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend of enjoying the transience of life.

May you walk in beauty.
