Earlier this week we had a light snowfall. I made some photographs through my office window of the
Minimalist Beauty
that I saw.
This week I feel that life is waking up again after a long winter’s rest. Much is happening that we can see, and much hidden growth and change is also occurring. Buds swell on tree branches, sap flows, early spring flowers push through the cold soil. It will be awhile before the greens pop out. But you can feel the changes happening.
Tuesday when I visited the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum I saw two big V’s of Canadian geese high in the sky flying north and honking loudly as they flew. Yesterday I saw 4 mallard ducks exploring the melt water at the edge of the pond behind our house. They were the first ducks of many that I expect will visit the pond this year.
This morning the puddles from yesterday had frozen again but as the day progressed, large puddles of water appeared on the pond and at the edge of the pond. Water flowed on the paths in my neighborhood and down the edges of the street. Each day I see more and more of lawns revealed.
It lifts my spirits so to feel the season arcing towards spring and to soak in all the sunlight and warmer days this week.
Minnesota Seasons
I love Minnesota with all of its lakes, trees, and nature. And I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. But the winters are wearing and long for me. Perhaps it makes me appreciate the rest of the year even more. Do you ever wonder whether birds, fox, squirrels, and deer also rejoice when spring arrives? It seems to me that they might.
Loving What Is
As much as I can I seek to stay in the present moment rather than wishing for something different. I’m not always able to do so, but I believe that the more that I soak in the sights, sounds, and feelings of ordinary moments, the more joy I experience.
“For some things there are no wrong seasons. Which is what I dream of for me.”
