As November continues to wind its way towards Thanksgiving I am paying attention to

Giving Thanks

Rather than wallowing in my distaste for the season we are entering, sadness regarding the divisive politics all around us, and worry about climate change, I am focusing today on the multitude of blessings I experience in my life.

What else can one do?

“Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude.”
A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Let’s start with the fact that I am among the most privileged people on earth with access to far more resources than 90% of the people living on the earth. I am truly blessed. Thank you, thank you! Help me to become more aware, use fewer resources, and to share the bounty that we have.

“Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer. And let faith be the bridge you build to overcome evil and welcome good.”
Maya Angelou, Celebrations: Rituals of Peace and Prayer

I give thanks for our health and well-being. Though we are both getting older and encountering bumps along that path, overall we are well. We recently learned that one of husband’s cousins has mouth cancer and is having a major surgery tomorrow followed by another surgery later to reconstruct the roof of his mouth and tongue. His journey makes all of our recent adventures in health care seem minor bumps in the road. Sending healing light to all who are suffering and giving thanks to my body for all that it does.

For Family and Friends

It’s easy to take our friends and family for granted. But there are many isolated individuals who have neither family or friends. There are migrants who are seeking a safe place to live where their families can grow and thrive. And there are also many people living in toxic family environments, not knowing that they deserve unconditional love and regard. For all those who feel alone and unloved I send love and light. To my family and friends, know that I cherish you and give thanks for having you in my life.

“In the end, though, maybe we must all give up trying to pay back the people in this world who sustain our lives. In the end, maybe it’s wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices.”
Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything

Beauty, Joy, Nature

Finally I give thanks for the three things that sustain me on my journey — beauty which I see everywhere I look, joy, which I choose every single day, and nature which brings me beauty and joy each and every day.

In this time of giving thanks, what are you grateful for my friends?

May you walk in beauty.
