As I gaze out the windows of our home this morning I see wildly contrasting
Colors of Spring
I love the way the colors pop in the filtered overcast light today.
Across the street I see a tree behind our neighbor’s house whose emerging leaves look a little bit like red flowers to me. The green grass almost glows in the light of the morning. In places a skiff of white snow on the grass brightly contrasts with the green. Our deck is completely covered with white but my prayer flags flap colorfully on the morning breeze.
Everywhere I look I see tiny yellow-green leaves budding on trees in the neighborhood. Across the pond our neighbor’s forsythia bush is still covered with cheerful bright yellow blossoms and daffodils bloom nearby on the banks of the pond.
Remembering how the landscape looked in previous months, it now seems to be bursting with color.
But more color is coming soon
Along with blossoming trees, spring ephemerals and wild flowers, summer gardens will be growing, and trees will be covered with leaves of varying shades of green. Lakes will reflect blue skies. Even the clothing we wear will show off brighter colors as summer approaches.
Children, It’s Spring
And this is the lady
whom everyone loves,
Ms. Violet
in her purple gown
or, on special occasions,
a dress the color
of sunlight. She sits
in the mossy weeds and waits
to be noticed.
She loves dampness.
She loves attention.
She loves especially
to be picked by careful fingers
young fingers, entranced
by what has happened
to the world.
We, the older ones,
call it Spring,
and we have been through it
many times.
But there is nothing
like the children bringing home
such happiness
in their small hands.

Ah, springtime. Even when you take a slight detour through scattered snow showers I love you.
Every year sometime in April I pack up my heavy sweaters and most of my long-sleeved shirts. And I unpack shorts, sleeveless shirts, and a much more colorful wardrobe. I haven’t yet made my fall/winter to spring/summer clothing switch this spring. Soon I think, soon I’ll be making the switch, but not yet.
Wishing you colorful spring days.
May you walk in beauty.
