I read the poetry quote on the image above in this week’s Brain Pickings post.
And it felt quite appropriate for this year of 2020. I highly recommend that you read the post. In it Maria Popova talks about her essential life learning for this year which was, “Choose Joy.”
In the times we are living in, choosing joy is more important than ever.
The painting above was one way that I choose joy. I played with color to create an abstract painting and then added dots of black watercolor and white pen ink. When I finished it, I was reminded of Australian Aboriginal
Songlines and Dreamtime
Which makes me wonder… what songlines are we following today in our country? And how are we honoring the sacred?
These days I follow the songline of chosing joy through creating, and caring for others by staying home, walking outside in wild areas with few people, wearing a mask when I go to the grocery store, and avoiding social gatherings.
Though I cannot control the outcome of the election, I can cast my vote. And I did. We voted with absentee ballots two weeks ago and dropped them off at the Plymouth City Hall site. Then later we checked on the we-vote website to ensure that our ballots would be counted.
If you haven’t voted yet, please vote
And encourage your friends, acquaintances and loved ones who are eligible to vote, to vote.
Be safe and careful and wear a mask if you vote in person. And if you vote by mail carefully follow all the instructions and get it in the mail as soon as possible. Better yet, check to see if there is an official drop box in your community
And before you vote, think about what kind of world you want to live in. Is it a world where lies, and self-interest of a few take precedence over the needs and dignity of all? I know I’m probably preaching to the choir here, but I don’t believe that our democracy can survive another four years of Donald Trump as president.
“For the world is in a bad state, but everything will become still worse unless each of us does his best.”
― Man’s Search for Meaning
Wishing you a joyous weekend in this eventful year of 2020. And also hoping that you find ways to choose joy today and always.
May you walk in beauty.
