I don’t know about you but I’m sure getting to work on staying in the present moment this week. Looking out our windows this morning to see more snow falling on top of the snow that is still there from earlier this week made my inner child want to have an all-out foot stomping tantrum.

Coming Back to the Present Moment

But then I noticed the strange circles being formed where the snow fell on the skim of ice on top of the pond and became curious about what was causing them.

And I sat down to do my morning meditation. It was a total monkey mind day for me. In fact I never did manage to quiet my thoughts. But I did notice that they were just thoughts, not reality. And when I let myself stay present for just one in breath and one out breath I knew that the only moment is now.

Now Now Now

A lot of my thoughts were projections into the future, believing that it was going to be such a long winter and losing hope for a return of fall-like weather. When I noticed those thoughts I was able to let go a bit and become more open and curious.

“Do not ruin today with mourning tomorrow.”
Catherynne M. Valente, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making

My work for today is to stay open and curious instead of internally judging or projecting into the future.

I share this in case you too are struggling with something that is happening outside of your control (like the weather) that is causing you to be unhappy.

Surrendering to my agitation and resistance to what is, helped me to regain my peace.

“Don’t look for peace. Don’t look for any other state than the one you are in now; otherwise, you will set up inner conflict and unconscious resistance. Forgive yourself for not being at peace. The moment you completely accept your non-peace, your non-peace becomes transmuted into peace. Anything you accept fully will get you there, will take you into peace. This is the miracle of surrender”
Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment

On a happier note, the weather today gives me plenty of time to play with photographing the flowers I picked up yesterday. I couldn’t decide between a bunch of white freesia (their scent is heavenly) and a bunch of chamomile flowers (so cheerful and bright) so I finally bought both bunches. If the day brightens up a bit I will spend a lot of time getting to know these flowers better through the lens of my camera.

How will you spend this precious day?

May you walk in beauty.
