It’s mid-July and we are in the middle of what I call

High Summer

Everything is lush and green. Tall wildflowers bloom in abundance. Everything still looks green and lush. I try to soak in every ounce of beauty and warmth during these days of full summer, knowing that they will come to an end all too soon.

This morning I headed to Wolsfeld Woods for a hike with my camera. It was a gorgeous day to be out in the woods, sunny with a few clouds in the sky and a lovely light breeze. At the entrance to the path into the woods the greenery around the sign for the woods almost covered the sign.

These woods are rarely busy with hikers in mid-summer. In past summers there were often so many mosquitoes in Wolsfeld woods that I rarely hiked there between June and the end of August. Today I hiked for about an hour without seeing a single person.

I’m glad I braved the woods today (covered with long pants, long-sleeved shirt, hat, and a bit of mosquito repellent on my hands and face). Surprisingly, there weren’t as many mosquitoes as I remember in past years. Yay!

Today I took a path that runs beside Wolsfeld Lake. There were a great many black Broad-winged Damselflies flitting here and there. They’re very shy but I managed to get close enough to photograph one at rest.

I was so grateful that the heat and humidity gave us a break this week. Though I worked up a sweat hiking, it was wonderful to be in the woods.

“When I rise up
let me rise up joyful
like a bird.

When I fall
let me fall without regret
like a leaf.”
Wendell Berry, The Mad Farmer Poems

When was the last time you took a hike in the woods all alone? Maybe it’s time to go exploring somewhere.

May you walk in beauty.
