I’ve been spending time looking back at photographs I made several years ago. One of my favorite summer activities in past years has been visiting the butterfly exhibit at the Como Conservatory and Zoo. I don’t think there will be a butterfly exhibit at Como this year.
Nevertheless I am finding ways to explore with my camera out in nature that are just as satisfying as photographing butterflies at Como.
So today I am
Looking back and looking forward
Despite everything going on — no actually, I should say BECAUSE of everything going on in the world today, art and creating are more important than ever. I received an email newsletter from speaker and writer, Danielle LaPorte today. The subject title in the message is, “Art is now a matter of urgency.“
Think about that for a moment.
Art is now a matter of urgency.
— Danielle LaPorte
When times are difficult, artists make art. Through some sort of mysterious alchemy artists create art that speaks of possibility and community out of fear and pain.Take a stroll through the areas of Minneapolis that were damaged by during the recent unrest. You will see art popping up everywhere. Around the shrine to George Floyd, art shines out. Even through the darkest times, creating art and viewing art speaks to the human soul and psyche.
Yesterday I created a new watercolor painting, very much of an exercise in exploration and serendipity. It started with me simply spraying part of the paper with water and beginning to lay down colors. And it ended up an abstract pear.
Tuning in to what brings you joy and expressing that joy is a gift not only to yourself, but to the world.
Are you looking back and looking forward too?
What will you create today?
May you walk in beauty.
