Steve

Every once in a while the universe delivers a sudden wake-up call. This week the wake-up call was the sudden passing of a friend’s husband and soulmate, Steve.

I’m not sure why this has rocked me so deeply. I feel regret for not taking the opportunity to get to know his generous soul better while he was here and keep remembering his Buddha smile and the twinkle in his eyes whenever I saw him. Now I wish I had pushed outside my introvert comfort zone to get to know him better.

I feel sadness for my friend and her son and for everyone who is coping with the illness or passing of a loved one. I am reminded of how suddenly life can change and that life is uncertain. And I’m challenged to remember my belief that the people we are in this lifetime are not all we are. We are spirits/souls and life does not end when we leave this plane of existence. I know in my heart that Steve’s spirit IS and always will be. But I will miss him here in this lifetime.

His passing also reminds me that our time with friends and loved ones is precious, our lives are precious. At the same time as I continue to focus on doing what brings me joy (making photographs, writing, and spending time with friends and family) I am re-assessing other ways that I am filling my days that are not bringing me joy. And I’m asking myself if I’m doing enough to connect with those I love and those in need.

Now is the only moment there is. Future and past are echoes of what might be or has been. So get your face out of Facebook, stop spending your instants on Instagram, take a break in your work.

Pause…

Breathe in deeply and give thanks for the beauty of this moment. Breathe out with ease and notice the ground beneath your feet and the sky above you. Feel the wonder of this moment on this earth.

Take time to reach out to someone and share the wonder, beauty, and full catastrophe of this thing called life.

May you walk in beauty.
