When was the last time you deliberately broke the rules of your particular art form or work form?
This week I went out with my camera deliberately shooting unfocused photographs, moving the camera while shooting, and pointing directly into bright light sources.
I was curious about playing with color, light, rhythm, and movement. I wanted to delight in the freedom of playing with light and color without expecting any particular result.
What fun!
“Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment.”
― Rumi, Masnavi i Man’avi, the spiritual couplets of Maula
It felt like opening up a place where grace can come in.
I found myself seeing differently, noticing color and rhythm almost as if it was a song being played. Some of the songs were exquisitely soft, rhythmic and beautiful. Others were bright and dynamic.
“Beyond our ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’
doesn’t make sense any more.”
― Rumi
Yes, there are so-called rules for many different art forms. Understanding and practicing on those rules is a way to build a toolbox of skills and abilities.
But beauty and art are beyond rules.
Letting go of ideas, language, and “rules” helps us be present in a different way.
What rules are waiting to be broken for you this week?
May you walk in beauty.
