Seeing with new eyes

Quote of the day: “Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand?”

“See” the sign says

My photography students were tired of making nature photos and wanted to photograph “something else.” I suggested that we go either to downtown Minneapolis or to the Uptown area to do some street photography.

We chose to go to Uptown early in the morning before most of the stores were open.

At first I didn’t see much that I wanted to photograph. Then, I let go of my default mode of seeing as nature photographer and slipped into seeing as street photographer.

Colors, signs, people, traffic, patterns, jumped out at me.

Once again, I felt surrounded and even chased by beauty, everywhere I looked.

I’ve driven through Uptown, gone to lunch and shopped there many times, yet it was as if I was seeing with new eyes—stores I never noticed before, colorful architecture, the shapes and rhythms of the city. Everything was new and interesting.

Photography opens up awareness and creates a kind of fresh perception if you let it. I experience photography as a deep spiritual practice teaching me to see beauty and to feel gratitude and appreciation.

What opens your awareness up? Is it drawing, or music, or dance? Or does photography light you up? Find a new way of seeing by doing what you love.
