Quote of the day: “It’s an amazing experience when you focus on the positive things in your life. Things start to change. You become happier. You see things differently. There might still be negative things there, but like an airplane flying overhead, they become the background noise of your mind.”
― Tom Giaquinto, Be A Good Human
Rainy day? Find something beautiful anyway
This morning I awoke to gray skies and dark clouds in the sky.
Before long, rain was steadily falling—again.
It has been an amazingly wet and cool June in Minnesota.
The greens of Minnesota are shining out in all their glory
It’s as if they glow. A friend said it’s almost like visiting the Emerald Isle. I haven’t been to Ireland but if it looks like this, it must be glorious.
It’s a great day for a visit to a conservatory or art museum. Yesterday, I made a quick stop at the Como Park Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota. As I walked in to the fern-filled entry, I felt as if I had transported myself back to Hawaii. Feeling humidity in the air, smelling plants growing and leaves decaying, seeing green everywhere I looked! Ah…it brings back such happy memories.
It was while I was in Hawaii, that I learned from watching Akiko (B&B host and Zen practitioner) to accept whatever the weather brought each day. It rained a lot there too—almost every day—but not all day, every day.
I discovered that when I stopped resisting what was inevitable (like the weather) I was happier.
There is such beauty in this world…
Look around you wherever you are, inside or outside, and see the beauty that surrounds you. It’s there, I know it is.
Last night I was reading Bryan Peterson’s book, Understanding Composition (see sidebar for link to it). He talked about taking students to a junk yard during photography workshops in an effort to shake them loose from their ordinary ways of seeing and judgments that they make about what is beautiful and what is ugly.
In the same way, I say again, Rainy Day, Find Something Beautiful!
I find it much more pleasant to find something positive to focus on rather than complaining again about the rain.
