Photographing the Golden Hour in Springtime is heavenly!
Quotes of the day:
“Lost, yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered for they are gone forever.” — Horace Mann
“Once in a golden hour,
I cast to earth a seed,
And up there grew a flower,
That others called a weed.
I’m teaching a photography class this spring called Photography as Spiritual Practice. In addition to doing a 30-day photography practice like 30 days of ordinary miracles or 30 days of discovery, we’re taking some time to go out together to make photographs.
Last night we went to the Lyndale Peace Garden in Minneapolis. Since it was the first sunny day in a week the park was full of walkers, joggers, bikers, and photographers!
Love is in the air. We saw many couples working with photographers to make the perfect engagement photos. It was fun to see the different poses and locations they chose and how they worked with the light and the landscape.
I also saw another photography class hard at work (or play more likely). The park in springtime on a beautiful day during golden hour is irresistible!
Last evening my students and I started talking about what kinds of photographs we each liked to take. I am drawn to nature, landscapes, and light. One of my students noticed that she likes to make photos of something that tells a story. She was drawn to the many different people and plaques in the park. Another student noticed that she tends to focus in on tiny details. She was fascinated photographing lichens and tiny flowers.
Everyone is drawn to different things. If I try to mimic someone else’s work I can learn things that I can use to photograph the subjects that light me up. But if I’m not photographing things that make me light up, there is always something missing in the photo.
There is a spark in each of us which is totally unique. When we find that spark and work with it, magic happens.
