Quote of the day: “All change is a miracle to contemplate; but it is a miracle that is taking place every moment.” — Henry David Thoreau
Along with the students in my Photography as Spiritual Practice class, I started a 30-day photo project today. Mine is called 30 days of Ordinary Miracles. Along with whatever else I post, I plan to post my daily “ordinary miracle” photos.
If you want to start a 30-day photo project to brighten up your photography practice, here are the project ideas I gave my class members to choose from. Each one helps us focus in on something positive in the world around us and helps to see with new eyes.
30 days of ordinary miracles
Each day for 30 days look for something in your mundane life that is a miracle. See the ordinary in an extraordinary way and fill your life with joy. Make at least one photo each day something that is an ordinary miracle.
30 days of gratitude
Each day for 30 days make a photo of something you are grateful for. Fill your life with gratitude.
30 days of beauty
Each day for 30 days find something beautiful in your ordinary life. Make a photo of it. Fill your life with beauty.
30 days of discovery
Each day for 30 days, take a walk over the same path. Every day find something different to photograph. Remember to change your vantage point—look up, look down, turn around. Fill your life with wonder.
30 days of light
Each day for 30 days notice the different qualities of light. Make a photograph that captures the different kinds of light that you see. Fill your life with light.
30 days of presence
Each day for 30 days take time before you pick up you camera to look with soft eyes. Gaze steadily without moving your eyes and notice color, shape, texture, and all the rest. Try to rest in your noticing without naming. Now pick up your camera and make at least one photograph. (This exercise can be combined with any of the ones listed above.) Fill your life with presence.
