Quote of the day: “But what is work and what is not work? Is it work to dig, to carpenter, to plant trees, to fell trees, to ride, to fish, to hunt, to feed chickens, to play the piano, to take photographs, to build a house, to cook, to sew, to trim hats, to mend motor bicycles? All of these things are work to somebody, and all of them are play to somebody. There are in fact very few activities which cannot be classed either as work or play according as you choose to regard them.” — George Orwell, The Road to Wigan Pier
We all walk through life on different paths. Some focus on survival, some on accumulating money or things, some on making art, some on being of service. Some folks discover a passion or a purpose very early in life and they never waver from that purpose. Others of us muddle through wondering what our purpose is most of our lives. Some days I’m sure of my purpose and other days I have no certainty or clarity about purpose at all. I even wonder if anyone has a purpose other than being and growing and experiencing life.
I try not to take it all too seriously, these mind games about purpose. But every once in a while I can’t help but ask the question, “Am I living my purpose?” I have no answer. I have no certainty that my life even has a purpose many days. So I breathe in and I breathe out and recognize that these thoughts about purpose are just thoughts and let them float through my mind like clouds through the sky. And I move on to do the next right thing, whatever that is.
What do you think about purpose?
