Quote of the day: “Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter.” — Oscar Wilde
Yesterday I attended the first day of a 2-day workshop called, “The Intimate Portrait.” The workshop is taught by Michael Crouser at the Mpls Photo Center. It was an excellent workshop. We started the day looking at portraits by different photographers and talking about the elements that each used to create their own personal style. Looking at different photographers’ bodies of work reminded me of the Oscar Wilde quote above. I think one can also say that every portrait made with feeling by a photographer is a portrait of the photographer.
In the afternoon, we made portraits with different lighting setups. It was the first time I’ve worked with models and that was a learning experience in itself. At first I found it very challenging to direct the models and ask them to create various poses. As the afternoon wore on, I got a little better, but I still feel that I prefer less posing and more natural style portraits.
Here are some of my favorites from the day.
