Quote of the day: “Age puzzles me. I thought it was a quiet time. My seventies were interesting and fairly serene, but my eighties are passionate. I grow more intense as I age.” —Florida Scott-Maxwell
The photo above is one of a series of photos I am taking of women age 50+ in a project called Women of a Certain Age. This project is born from a desire to show the beauty of older natural women in a culture that idolizes youth.
When I arrived to make the photos at my friend’s home yesterday, she met me at the door in a comfortable sweat suit, no makeup, no special adornment. After she greeted me, she said, “I suppose I should brush my hair.” That and a little lipstick was the extent of her prep for our photo session.
As we talked, I asked her what her favorite things to do were. “Anything outdoors and physical. I like running, hiking, dancing. So long as it’s active and outside I’m happy,” she answered. Not a quiet time, but a good time.
Halfway through the photo session, she made a quick clothing change into a dress that her mother had made for herself over 40 years ago. Standing barefooted in the light streaming into her living room windows, I found her beautiful and alive and totally unique.
Here are some more photos of her. The first installment of my gallery of “Women of a Certain Age” will be coming soon to my website. Stay tuned…
