Look for the helpers…

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

Fred Rogers

Last week we visited our daughter and her family, who live in the Kansas City area. Our daughter (who trained as a biomedical engineer but returned to school after working for a few years to become an RN) has just completed her first year of working as an RN. We visited with her just after she finished working her third 12-hour shift in a row, on a surgical floor in the hospital, tired and a little wound up.

As we talked about her day, she told us that one of the patients she was responsible for “coded” that afternoon and that while performing chest compressions to revive him, she feared that she had broken his rib. I tried to imagine myself in such a life and death situation and simply could not. To hold life and death in your hands must be a terrible and wonderful burden.

I never felt called to such work in my life so I have often asked my daughter if she’s happy with her new career. Despite the challenges she always says, “Yes!” She chose to become a nurse because she wanted to work directly with people, to help them and she finds it very rewarding even with the challenges it brings.

Thinking about her, I began thinking about all of the helpers in the world, who do what they do because they want to help others.

What wonderful gifts they bring!

Many work long days, holidays, night shifts, and more so that all of those who need care can get it. This holiday season remember the helpers in your life by saying, “Thank you.”

May you walk in beauty.
