When March arrives in Minnesota, many begin wishing spring would arrive even though we know that winter can last for at least another month, if not 2 more months.

I have to admit that I am beginning to tire of the cold weather and wish for warmer temperatures.  While the east coast and south have more snow and bad weather than they need, Minnesota has had a snow drought this winter.

We spent last weekend on the north shore of Lake Superior and even there, the snow was much less than normal. Still, I was amazed at how many Minnesotans went north for the weekend.

We did a little hiking on trails at Gooseberry State Park, Split Rock and near the cabin where we stayed, but the ice near the lake was quite treacherous and without ice cleats on my boots I chose to stay on safer ground.

I took some iPhone shots when I was out hiking and a few sunset shots with my Canon camera. I have concluded that I am not an outdoor winter photographer. My love of making photographs and of northern Minnesota does not overcome my dislike of being cold.

I got up to check out the sunrise potential Saturday morning and the skies looked interesting but not stunning. Then I saw the size of the waves on Lake Superior and knew that with those waves came a strong wind. Combine the strong winds and the 1 degree temperature outside and the windchill was well below zero.

Instead of going out for sunrise photos, I climbed back in bed and went back to sleep.

I am not a winter lover.

Mostly I endure winters. I love the beauty of fresh snowfalls and the quiet peace of walking during a soft snowfall.

I don’t love winter driving, below zero wind chills, and less daylight.

Longing for spring

We are expecting warmer temperatures later this week and I am elated! Every year I hope for an early spring. Occasionally it happens. More often it doesn’t.

The light is also returning and for that I rejoice! I have been basking in the sun coming in our windows and look forward to basking in sunlight outdoors soon.

How about you? Are you longing for spring or wishing for more snow and winter fun?

May you walk in beauty.
