Quote of the day: “In the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, Long ago.” — Christina G. Rossetti

Yesterday we had a big snowstorm that began mid-morning and lasted through most of the night. Strong winds south of Minneapolis created blizzard conditions that stopped travelers.  This morning, although the roads were well cleared of snow, road surfaces everywhere are covered with a thick layer of ice that has made travel challenging throughout the Twin Cities.

The snow fell hard and kept on falling as temperatures dropped from the low thirties into polar vortex realms again. Heavy wet snow froze into layers of ice underneath, locking the white blanket in place on trees and bushes.

The quote above seems very apt for this winter. “snow on snow, Snow on snow…”

I made some photos in the afternoon during heavy snowfall and again with my iPhone from the car in the evening

And even though I am tired of snow and cold, the beauty takes my breath away again and again and I am filled with gratitude to be alive here, now, in the midst of it all.
