Quote of the day: “Menders of all times and places have taught that silencing the thoughts in our heads and opening to the experience of the body and emotions is the basis of all healing. It’s the only means by which we can reclaim our true nature or feel the subtle cues telling us how to find our way through life.” ― Martha N. Beck

Butterfly Whispers

Today I while photographing the stunning fall beauty at Lyndale Peace Park, I wanted to find some butterflies to photograph. With the dry summer and fall in Minnesota butterflies are scarce.

Last year in September and early October, I saw butterflies everywhere I went. This year, I rarely see a butterfly when I’m out.

Today, I tried entering the silence and sending out a mind call to the butterflies, asking for one to come a pose for me, sending unconditional love and appreciation in advance.

After sending out the call, I tried to let go of any expectation and just accept whatever happened. I became absorbed in photographing flowers and other insects.

As I was returning to the car, I had a strong sense of being told, “Go this way.” So I did. A couple of steps down the path I saw 2 monarch butterflies fluttering around the flowers. One of them flew off. But the other one let me get quite close and then fluttered to an even closer flower as if it was posing for a picture.

I made a couple of dozen photos and had just thought, “I think I’m done. Thank you so much,” when the monarch flew off and disappeared.

Did my mental call and thoughts cause the butterfly to appear and linger? I don’t know. I simply give thanks for ordinary miracles like this, which appear in my life regularly.

Fox Visitation

Yesterday, I had a different kind of visitor. We have a pond behind our house and often see wildlife in our back yard. Early in the morning I looked out the window and saw an adult fox sitting at the edge of the pond watching a family of mallard ducks swim in circles about 6-8 feet from the shore.

The fox was beautiful! Sitting with its ears perked up, lying down and rolling in the grass, looking like it was trying to hide behind a log by the shore but failing to hide those perky ears. I crouched by the window and watched for a long time.

Then I decided to try getting my camera to see if I could get a long telephoto shot from the house. As I returned to the window, the fox must have seen a glint of light flashing from a lens reflection. It took off, and I captured only a quick somewhat blurry shot of the fox running away.
