Quote of the day: “When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.” ― Rumi

Hot summer day + sprinkler = Joy

The photo above is from a photo shoot yesterday.  At the end of a very warm photo shoot my friend saw the sprinklers and couldn’t resist the urge to play. I love this photo because she’s no longer thinking about my presence but just playing.  You can see the swing of her wet hair and her absorption in her play.

I enhanced this photo with 2 layers of Kim Klassen’s kk_letgo texture and a warming filter to create the feel of the hot summer day. I love how it turned out!

I have become fascinated with creating “real” photos that reflect the soul of the person being photographed. It’s more difficult than I anticipated creating a photography experience where a person feels free to play and not be concerned about, “how do I look.” We carry so much baggage about how we look and standing (or sitting) a person in front of a camera brings all the self-censorship to the surface.

I try to engage everyone I photograph in conversation so that I can capture the way they move and talk and look and hopefully they become absorbed in what matters to them rather than focused on me and my camera. It is an art make portraits, an art that can be healing, an art that I still am learning. So many of the women that I photograph don’t see their own beauty. I have become inspired to find ways of portraying their beauty so that they can see and appreciate it.

This truly is a beautifully rendered capture of your friend. I am sure you had many more like it.
