Quote of the day: “You were given life; it is your duty (and also your entitlement as a human being) to find something beautiful within life, no matter how slight.” ― Elizabeth Gilbert

Summer Garden Flowers

I have often said that since I became a photographer I see beauty everywhere I go. Lately I’ve been thinking about whether that is true. It is true that I prefer nature and flowers to concrete and metal. I almost always photograph the things I love like nature and flowers and people. I rarely seek out places I don’t like to photograph.

My photographic challenge this week from Doug Beasley‘s Vision Quest Cards: Photo Assignments For Personal and Spiritual Growth is, “Go somewhere you don’t like. Find the beauty and make beautiful photographs.”

I haven’t yet accomplished this challenge. The card has been sitting on my desk for 2 weeks now and still I resist. It is so much easier to stay in my comfort zone and go places that I am familiar with and love. Today I commit to completing this assignment before the end of the week and showing the photos I make on this blog.

A friend who grew up in another country recently told me that Americans are afraid of being uncomfortable. I think there is some truth to his statement. It is easy to get comfortable in one’s routines and stop moving or growing. Stepping out of my comfort zone almost always brings me growth and surprises. Yet I resist it.

How about you? When was the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone?

I made today’s photos at the house of a friend I photographed yesterday – summertime beauty. The flower photos are textured with Kim Klassen’s textures kk_simplistic and kk_happyheart. The porch photo is textured with Kim Klassen’s textures kk_epiphany and kk_providence.

Ah…summer on the porch
