Every child has known God,
Not the God of names,
Not the God of don’ts,
Not the God who ever does Anything weird,
But the God who knows only 4 words.
And keeps repeating them, saying:
“Come Dance with Me , come dance.

Walking the Labyrinth

Last weekend I attended a retreat with a theme of balance. Because I didn’t believe in balance as a destination, I wasn’t sure I wanted to attend. I’ve always thought of balance as static and as trying to reach a destination and then stay there.
But the retreat was an annual event organized by the women’s organization of our church and I wanted to spend more time with the women I already knew, and get to know others better too. So I went. And I’m so glad that I did.
Maria Genné, founder and director of Kairos Dance Theatre opened the retreat with a workshop on “Dynamic Balance: the Dance of Life.” Here is a short video about Kairos Dance Theatre.

I was inspired by Maria and by the idea that balance isn’t a noun; it’s a verb! It’s about moving and connecting and listening. It’s not about reaching some static destination which you try to hold on to. Instead we need to move and respond and interact with presence and awareness. All of us need to move, regardless of our age.

I had arrived at the workshop thinking, “I don’t really feel like dancing tonight. I think I’ll just watch.”  But within minutes I was on my feet moving in an organic, fluid, dynamic way, and Maria was working her magic with all of us. Wow!

I’m so excited that Maria’s dance company has a program here in the Twin Cities called “The Dancing Heart” where they go into long term care facilities, adult day cares, and senior community centers and engage people in movement and interaction, weaving dance and story telling. Their program has been shown to improve flexibility, memory, engagement, and balance of older, frail adults. Think what a little more movement can do for you and me to keep us young longer.

I’m so inspired by Maria’s work that I plan to call her office this week and find out how I can volunteer with the program.

I hope you’re finding ways to move that you enjoy and that fill you with a sense of well-being.

Happy Feet!
